Times TRavel

SNA Displays collaborated with One Times Square, home of the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball, and owner/developer Jamestown to create Times Travel, a multi-sensory, experiential journey through the history of Times Square and the ball drop.

SNA Displays played a key role in the Times Travel interactive museum experience by manufacturing and installing more than 2,700 square feet of video hardware throughout multiple key exhibits. The indoor displays sport pixel pitches ranging from 1.5 to 6 mm while the combined dvLED network processes more than 86 million pixels.

Times Travel transports visitors back through centuries of Times Square history through interactive storytelling and immersive exhibits:

Entry Exhibit

The entrance exhibit is a triangular display that welcomes visitors as they begin their journey through Times Travel. The 2.5 mm BOLD™ Interior display has distinctive stair-stepped edges along one side and measures 11’10” tall x 10’6” wide (1,440 x 1,280 pixels) along its longest side.

Cellar Crystal Core

On the building’s basement level, more than 170 linear feet of dvLED line a path that takes viewers on an experiential journey through time. The BRILLIANT™ Interior displays snake through the space in concave and convex curves and feature a tight 1.5 mm pixel pitch. Through a captivating blend of motion-activated photo portals and virtual storytelling, guests access the “memories” of One Times Square in a way that bridges the past and present, creating a transformative encounter where history and innovation converge

By far the most complicated exhibit due to its architectural complexity and use of flexible LED panels, the 4’6” tall video displays are mounted at eye level to maximize immersion and minimize potential damage to the displays due to the proximity of each guest. The same LED technology appears on other levels of the museum in hallways and waiting areas to increase excitement and drive curiosity.

Decades of Change

In the Decades of Change exhibit located on the 16th floor, a 50-foot-long concave LED video screen, also with a 1.5 mm pitch, wraps around the room and provides an immersive “taxi ride” view through the history of Times Square. Visitors board the virtual taxicab and zip up Broadway in an adventure through history, passing old Broadway theaters, marquee signs, and other scenes and sounds from historic events that changed the neighborhood. The display is 7’9” tall with a resolution of 1,512 x 9,792 and processes 14.8 million pixels.

Eternal Midnight

Visitors experience the iconic New Year’s Eve Ball Drop from the perspective of revelers from the past century as they ring in the New Year. Past New Year’s Eve Balls, including a replica of the original 1907 Ball and the most recently retired “Big Ball” that rang in the new year from 2008-2025 are on display for guests to observe and photograph.

The Eternal Midnight exhibit consists of more than a dozen individual LED video screens that allow guests to experience different moments of the ball drop. At the New Year’s Eve Crowd corner of the exhibit, seven 1.5 mm screens surround guests with more than 55 feet of dvLED to recreate the feeling of standing in the crowd during past countdowns.

In another portion of the exhibit, guests can interact with one of five Fireworks Stations, each with a miniature NYE Ball. Upon pressing the ball, they are treated to their own private fireworks show on a 1.5 mm, 7’2” tall x 6’11” wide (1,404 x 1,344) video wall.

Finally, 6 mm ticker countdown displays show how much time is left before the next New Year's celebration. Likewise, a large curved screen in the back provides added immersion right before guests are showered with confetti that includes resolutions and wishes guests have written for themselves.

Design and tech partners include Roto (design and consultation), BHVR (content and design), Synapse Audio Visual Designs (AV integration), and AMA Signs (LED installation assistance). Elevate is the property’s operating partner and exclusive brand partnerships agency.

SNA Displays also provided a large LED network for the exterior of One Times Square.
