A HEAD OF ITS TIME
Sansi North America (SNA) Displays custom-manufactured the LED technology for one of the United States' most intriguing interactive digital displays. Unveiled at the Greater Columbus (OH) Convention Center, the LED sculpture was built in the shape of a human head, complete with tight-radius contours.
The project was engineered and produced by DCL (Design Communications, Ltd). For more in-depth information on the production of the "As We Are" art piece, visit DCL's project page.
CUSTOM LED TECHNOLOGY
The 14-foot-tall LED sculpture features a 5 mm pixel pitch, meaning the center of each pixel is only 5 mm from the center of an adjacent pixel. SNA Displays custom-manufactured the 5 mm LED panels at 1.5" wide by 6" high (just 8 by 30 pixels), allowing DCL's team to assemble the panels along the facial contours of the structure.
The interactive digital art piece includes more than 3,500 LED panels and over 845,000 pixels.
SMD PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY
The art piece employs surface-mount device (SMD) LED technology, where the LEDs in each pixel are packaged together, allowing for crisp, clear imagery and a widened viewing experience. SNA Displays provides the widest offering of SMD technology in the LED display industry, from ultra-fine-pitch interior screens to wide-pitch exterior displays, and everything in between.
THE ULTIMATE SELFIE MACHINE
The art piece, "intended to present Columbus as a welcoming, diverse society" according to artist Matthew Mohr, is itself a photo booth. Visitors sit inside the sculpture and interact with a touch-screen monitor. After 30 cameras inside the booth simultaneously take the subject's photograph from various angles, the resulting three-dimensional image is displayed on the sculpture.
